On International Youth Day this year, MTN launched an AI-powered Job Board across the eleven markets where its Skills Academy operates. The feature does something the platform hadn't done before: it connects a learner's training record directly to job listings, flags the skills gap between what a candidate has and what a role requires, and routes them to a free course to close it.

It's a genuinely useful tool. It's also a quiet admission.

MTN's Skills Academy launched in 2022. Since then it has recorded nearly 526,000 enrolments and 192,000 course completions across digital literacy, coding, data analytics, AI, cybersecurity, and entrepreneurship. Those are real numbers, at real scale, from a company with the resources to build almost anything it wants. And after four years of that, the thing MTN decided it still needed to build was a way to connect training to a job.

That's not a criticism of MTN. It's the clearest evidence available right now of a pattern worth naming plainly: training completion and employment are not the same output, and a platform can get very good at the first one while the second one stays stuck.

A second program, the same question, earlier

Five days after MTN's launch, Meta announced AI Academy Nigeria, a partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the 3MTT programme, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria. The academy runs three tracks: AI skills development delivered through Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and DataCamp; a developer bootcamp; and a startup pitchathon offering funding to the strongest teams.

It's a well-designed program, and it's still early enough to make a choice MTN's Skills Academy didn't get to make until year four: whether the path from training to employment gets built in from the start, or gets added later once the completion numbers pile up and the placement numbers don't keep pace.

What the employer data actually says

It's tempting to read these launches against the frequently cited claim that 230 million jobs in sub-Saharan Africa will require digital skills by 2030. That figure comes from a 2019 IFC study, and it's worth being honest about its foundation: the underlying survey reportedly reached only 15% of its intended sample. A number cited this often, seven years on, deserves sturdier ground than that. The figure may not be wrong. It is old, and thinner underneath than the confidence with which it gets cited each time a new program launches.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 offers a sturdier, more current picture, built on surveys of over 1,000 employers representing 14 million workers across 55 economies and 22 industry clusters, with a dedicated look at sub-Saharan Africa. Two of its findings sit in real tension, and that tension is the actual story. Sub-Saharan African employers are the most optimistic in the world about talent availability, with the region's population set to grow 79% over the next 30 years, almost half expect the supply of workers to improve by 2030, against just 29% globally. But the same report's Nigeria findings complicate that optimism considerably: 87% of Nigerian employers say they will need more network and cybersecurity skills by 2030, well above the global average of 70%, with AI, big data, and systems thinking close behind. Employers expect more people. In the market where Meta just launched its AI Academy, they do not yet expect those people to arrive with the right skills.

That's the actual gap. It isn't a shortage of training programs, Africa has more of those launching every month. It's a shortage of pipelines that reliably turn training into a placement, at the pace the population is growing.

The design choice, made early or made late

MTN's job board and Meta's AI Academy are both, in their own way, responses to this gap. One built the training layer first and is now building the placement layer to catch up. The other has the chance to build both from day one. Neither outcome is a failure. This is what it looks like for an ecosystem to learn in public, and that's a healthy thing for funders, ministries, and university partners backing these programs to watch closely, because the lesson is transferable in a way the specific program isn't.

For anyone designing or funding the next initiative, MTN's job board is worth reading as a data point, not a template. It answers a question worth asking before a single naira or dollar is committed: does this program's outcome metric stop at completion, or does it follow the learner to a placement? A funder measuring success in enrolments and certificates will keep discovering, years later, exactly what MTN discovered. A funder measuring success in placements has to design for that from the proposal stage, not the retrofit stage.

MTN spent four years and 192,000 course completions learning that training and employment have to be designed together, not sequenced. That is a genuinely useful lesson for the rest of the ecosystem. The programs, funders, and governments building the next wave of these initiatives don't have to relearn it independently. They can simply choose to build it in from the start.
